(Desu)

is / am / are (polite copula).

Connection rules

  • Noun or na-adjective + です
  • Often follows い-adjectives (e.g., 高いです) as a politeness marker, even though it is not formally copular in that use.
  • The plain-form equivalent is だ. In feminine plain speech だ is often dropped entirely.
