Connection rules

  • Godan / Ichidan V dict + まい (or 〜ます stem + まい for ichidan, varied). Irregular: する → すまい / しまい; くる → くまい / こまい.
  • Literary / archaic negative volitional — equivalent of modern ないだろう / ない.
  • Two senses: negative prediction ('won't') and negative intention ('will not').
