as if / as though.

Connection rules

  • V plain / i-adj + かのように; na-adj + (な / である) + かのように; noun + (である / の) + かのように.
  • Counterfactual: the comparison is to something that isn't actually the case.
  • More literary than ように alone — the か adds a hypothetical / counterfactual flavor.

He talked as if he knew nothing at all.
