Connection rules

  • V plain / i-adj + 以上(は); na-adj + である + 以上(は); noun + である + 以上(は).
  • The premise justifies an obligation or expectation in the main clause.
  • Common in commitment contexts: 約束した以上、守らなければならない ('since I promised, I must keep it').

Examples

約束やくそく以上いじょうまもなけれならない

Yakusoku shi ta ijou, mamora nakere ba nara nai.

Since I promised, I have to keep it.
