んとする
(N to suru)
about to / trying to / on the verge of (literary).
Connection rules
- ＋V volitional (classical む/ん) + とする. For godan: 行かんとする. For ichidan: 食べんとする (or 食べようとする in modern form).
- ＋Literary / classical — modern equivalent is 〜ようとする.
- ＋Common fixed forms: 言わんとする, 消えんとする, 死なんとする.
Examples

彼の言わんとするところを理解した。
Kare no iwa n to suru tokoro o rikai shi ta.
I understood what he was trying to say.
