(N to suru)

about to / trying to / on the verge of (literary).

Connection rules

  • V volitional (classical む/ん) + とする. For godan: 行かんとする. For ichidan: 食べんとする (or 食べようとする in modern form).
  • Literary / classical — modern equivalent is 〜ようとする.
  • Common fixed forms: 言わんとする, 消えんとする, 死なんとする.
