inevitably / as one would expect / destined to.

Connection rules

  • V dict-form + べくして + (usually the same verb in past). Common pattern: 〜べくして + 〜た.
  • Literary inevitability — 'as fate would have it'.
  • Often with same verb repeated: 起こるべくして起こる, 勝つべくして勝つ.
